ein mobiler Computer, der das Format eines Schreibblocks aufweist und wie eine Schreibtafel bedient wird. Seine Oberseite wird von einem berührungsempfindlichen Bildschirm gebildet, über den man die Daten per Stift eingeben kann. Eine Tastatur ist also nicht vorhanden, kann aber für den stationären Einsatz angeschlossen werden. Die ersten Prototypen eines Tablet PC wurden Mitte des Jahres 2001 vorgestellt. Marktchancen und Entwicklungsrichtungen dieses neuen Geräts werden unterschiedlich eingeschätzt. Der Tablet-PC tritt in Zukunft vielleicht in Konkurrenz zum Notebook oder nimmt eine Nische zwischen Notebook und Handheld-Computer ein.
 
 
Manche Tablet-PC-Modelle können den Bildschirm nicht nur im Querformat (Landscape), sondern auch im Hochformat (Portrait) nutzen, was sich oft besser für die Darstellung von Dokumenten eignet.
